I found out about this protest on Facebook several weeks ago.
I was still late getting there.
I suck at getting things going on Saturdays. Oh, and this Saturday especially sucked. While taking a shower I managed to get a huge blob of body soap in my eye…with my contacts in. Oh my god. It was awful. And even though I got it to stop stinging, my eye teared up and cried…all day long…all night long. Did I mention that it was cold out? That just made the whole situation worse.
Anyway, Dean and I ended up going to this one. Keegan had practice again and Anais kept Isabel home because it was pretty chilly. I figured that it was probably going to be pretty dead in the city, so we drove instead of taking the metro. I was right. It was dead (and we even got to park a block away, which is amazing). I made my sign on the way there. It was on the back of my “Make America Sane Again” sign from the Women’s March. It said:
“‘There was a little baby who was born far away. And another who was born on the very next day. And both of these babies, as everyone knows, had ten little fingers and ten little toes.’ -Mem Fox Mr. Trump should learn something from people like this, not detain them.”
(You probably had to be pretty close to actually read it, but I was very happy it turned out as neatly as it did…cars are bumpy.)
The protest was small and located in front of the White House (or was it the back?). Whatever side Lafayette Park is on. We were an hour and a half late. I joined and Dean walked around taking pictures. Here are some photos that he took:
I would like to add…
One of the people in this group was an asshole. Right before everyone started to disband, the group was singing “This Land is Your Land”. In the middle of this, someone started yelling, “SHAME! SHAME! SHAME!” I thought that this was toward the White House in general….although it seemed a strange time to be saying it. According to Dean, I was mistaken. It was to some teenager wearing a Donald Trump hat. The guy was yelling at a kid. Idiot. This is NOT what we are about and this is NOT appropriate behavior. Do NOT yell at anybody, especially a kid. It makes us look bad. I will add, it was ONE idiot…and I think most of the people there were as dumbfounded as I was. What a crap thing to do.
